     In his second Inaugural Address, F.D.R.  said on January 20, 1937:

"I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, and ill-nourished.  The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."

[ the exact opposite of what today's "Greedy Old Party" leaders believe.  They would like to return our country to "the good old days", when the avarice of the rich was not restrained and they were not required by "big government" to provide their employees fair wages, safe working conditions, or any health or retirement benefits.]

        When he signed Social Security into law, F.D.R. said of it :

"We can never insure one-hundred percent of the population against one-hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life. But we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age. This law, too, represents a cornerstone in a structure which is being built, but is by no means complete.... It is...a law that will take care of human needs and at the same time provide for the United States an economic structure of vastly greater soundness."   – August 14, 1935

As time went on in Biblical times, there arose once in a great while a preacher whose words were worth recording for future generations to hear.  A few of these made predictions about the future, (mostly warnings, in effect, about the consequences of hearing or failing to hear God's teaching).  But what made them great "seers" or "prophets" wasn't what they could predict about the future, but what they dared to see and say about the present, i.e.  teaching that some people in high places did not want to hear,  such as . . .

{ Micah 6: 8-12 }

" What does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?  The voice of the LORD cries to the city :   . . .  Can I forget the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the accursed scant measure?  Can I tolerate wicked scales and a bag of dishonest weights?
        Your wealthy are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies, with tongues of deceit in their mouths.  Your rich men are wealthy through extortion and violence;  your citizens are so used to lying that their tongues can't tell the truth! "

That's not something that the rich and powerful of any age appreciate hearing.  They have been known to hurt and even kill preachers who stress such scriptures, while regularly rewarding with power, money and influence those preachers who tow the line and promote the belief that the rich have "earned" their vast economic advantage over the poor "by hard work" – in sharp contrast to the poor, who could be rich too, if they too would only work hard. –

The 1933 attempted coup against F.D.R.

When the rich and the powerful of our country failed at the election polls in their attempt to keep this friend of the common man, woman and child out of the White House, they promptly went to work on a treasonous plot to overthrow the president selected by the people of America, and to replace him with a friend of big business, i.e. a "George W. Bush".  The coup might have succeeded, had not an honorable military hero, whom they had planned to use, exposed their treasonous plot to the authorities.  So powerful were these traitors, however, that they were able to avoid prosecution for their criminal behavior and the shame that history should perpetuate, by making sure their treachery is never forgotten.  For "the rest of the story", see the attempted Republican coup of 1933.

F.D.R. wasn't perfect

It's been debated for many years, and (as of August, 2018) Washington's Holocaust Museum has come down on the side of those who blame everybody but F.D.R. himself for the deplorable role of his administration regarding the Jewish Holocaust. Although I am a great admirer of his, it pains me to say that I find the arguments made in the article "Why FDR Abondoned The Jews" by Debbie Maimon in her Aug 1, 2018, https://yated.com/why-fdr-abondoned-the-jews/ article that blames F.D.R. himself for many of those failings very convincing.

Eleanor Roosevelt, what a woman !

Some day, I hope to devote a page of her own to this phenomenal person. But for the moment, in the interview as she was becoming first lady, Barbara Bush was asked by a journalist which of the former first ladies she saw herself emulating, and how she felt about Eleanor Roosevelt.  The comparison offended her and she said that she never wanted to be compared to Mrs. Roosevelt, because her family had hated her.
        How sad! According to Gallup Polls, even after she was no-longer first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt was voted "most-admired women in the world" for 13 years in a row! Even though first ladies often achieve that distinction, Barbara Bush only achieved it twice, before she was replaced by Hillary Clinton for 23 of the next 24 years. I tell the truth, and they think it's hell.

  Adlai Stevenson, (who lost to Ike Eisenhower) had a slightly different twist :
" If the Republicans will stop telling lies about the Democrats,
we will stop telling the truth about them."

{ Amos 8:4-7 }

" Listen, you merchants who rob the poor, trampling on the needy; you who long for the Sabbath to end and the religious holydays to be over so you can get out and start cheating again – using your weighted scales and under-sized measures; you who make slaves of the poor, buying them for their debt of a piece of silver or a pair of shoes, or selling them your moldy wheat."

Once again, this kind of scripture doesn't make those who oppress or exploit others happy.  But if you put yourself in the shoes of the men, women and children who are being oppressed, it should certainly make you happy to know that God doesn't approve of sneaky merchandisers who are constantly using dirty tricks to reduce the quantity and/or quality of their products and / or increasing the prices, and eliminating the opportunities customers have to buy such products at lower prices from competitors.
        If Amos is right, then, although businessmen may never hear a word of it from their ministers or priests, they will learn when it is too late...  The Lord has sworn: " I won't forget your deeds! "

{ Micah 7:3 }

        " They go at their evil deeds with both hands, and how skilled they are in using them!    The governor and judge alike [not to mention "legislators"] demand bribes [and/or "campaign contributions"].  The rich man pays them off and tells them whom to ruin.   Justice is twisted between them."

{ Amos 2:6-7 }

        The Lord says, " The people of Israel have sinned again and again, and I will not forget it.  I will not leave them unpunished any more.  For they have perverted justice by accepting bribes and sold into slavery the poor who can't repay their debts; they trade them for a pair of shoes.  They trample the poor in the dust and kick aside the meek.  At their religious feasts they lounge in clothing stolen from their debtors, and in my own Temple they offer sacrifices of wine they purchased with stolen money."

{Amos 5:12 }

"For many and great are your sins.  I know them all so well. You are the enemies of everything good; you take bribes; you refuse justice to the poor."

What's this?  People in public office allowing themselves to be persuaded by people with money to deny justice to those with less money and prestige?  Maybe God won't consider all of those "campaign contributions" and lobbying gifts given by the rich to the politicians or our day as bribes and will not hold the harm these politicians do to the poor against them.  Maybe God will forgive powerful employers for taking enormous benefits for themselves and denying their employees the right to even join together in unions to demand safer working conditions and more just compensation for themselves and their families.  Maybe God will smile on people who become billionaires by exploiting those laborers least protected by their governments and communities around the world.  Maybe the prophets didn't know what they were talking about !   but what if they did?

Some people have observed that under Roosevelt, the ruling elites allowed the common person to have some "socialistic" benefits in order to blunt the appeal of communism.  If there's any truth to that, then now that communism is no longer a threat, it appears that the ruling elites are trying to take those benefits back.
